The interim government of Bangladesh has issued a notification banning all activities of the Awami League and all its affiliates until the trial is over. And this issue came up in the press briefing of the US State Department.<\/p>\n
In response to a question at a regular briefing on Tuesday (May 13), the US State Department’s deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott explained the US position on the matter.<\/p>\n
He said, we know that the interim government has banned the Awami League from all kinds of political activities, until the verdict of the special tribunal is issued against the party. We do not support any specific political party in Bangladesh. We support a free and democratic process and a fair and transparent trial process for all.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, India has officially expressed concern over the ban on the activities of the Awami League. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at the regular briefing of the Ministry of External Affairs in Delhi on Tuesday evening, imposing a ban on the Awami League without following any due process is a worrying incident.<\/p>\n
Earlier, on Monday afternoon, the Awami League was officially banned by a presidential order in a notification signed by Home Ministry Senior Secretary Nasimul Gani. Later that night, the Election Commission suspended the party’s registration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
