A court has granted a five-day remand to 17 members of the banned organization Hizb ut Tahrir, who were arrested during a March for Khilafat procession in front of El Mallick at Paltan intersection in the capital. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masuma Rahman issued the remand order after a hearing on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The accused who have been remanded are Abdullah, Tariqul Islam, Ahmed Nafis Morshed, Shahadat Hossain, Tanvir Mahtab Rafat, Abu Shohaib, Ashfaq Ahmed, Sabbir Hossain, Rifat Islam Rishad, Al Rafi Sajjad, Redwan bin Shahidul, Miyaji Abdullah Al Muttaki, Habibur Rahman, Helal Uddin, Asaduzzaman Noor, Tanim Sikder Sihab, Ahmed Nasif Kabir Kabyo.<\/p>\n
The investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Paltan Model Police Station Noor Islam, applied for a 10-day remand of the accused in the case under the Anti-Terrorism Act.<\/p>\n
The remand application states that on March 7, around 2 pm, an unknown group of 2000\/2200 people took out a procession called ‘March for Khilafat’ under the banner of Hizb ut Tahrir, Ulayah Bangladesh, a government-banned organization, from the north gate of the National Mosque Baitul Mukarram Mosque. Then, when they tried to move towards Paltan More, the police stopped them.<\/p>\n
Ignoring the police’s obstruction, the accused began marching on the paved road in front of L. Mallick at Paltan More of Paltan Model Police Station at around 2:10 pm, carrying anti-government flags, banners and sticks, chanting slogans in an attempt to attack the country’s sovereignty. When the police force on duty tried to stop the procession in the Paltan More area, they got angry and started throwing bricks and stones at the police.<\/p>\n
It further said that the police, on the orders of higher authorities, hurled gas guns and sound grenades to disperse the illegal procession in order to maintain law and order and protect lives and property. However, the leaders and activists continued to throw bricks and stones at the police. The accused were then arrested.<\/p>\n
From the flags, slogans and related activities used by them at the scene, it can be confirmed that they are active members and supporters of the banned organization Hizb ut Tahrir. We pray for their 10-day remand.<\/p>\n
