BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has called on everyone to keep a vigilant eye on the women’s community so that they are not deprived. He made this call in a message sent to the media on Friday on the occasion of International Women’s Day tomorrow, Saturday.<\/p>\n
Tarique Rahman extended his heartfelt greetings and congratulations to all women in the world, including Bangladesh, on International Women’s Day and wished them continued happiness, peace and prosperity. He said, ‘International Women’s Day is a very significant day. The economic, political and social establishment of women worldwide is important. This day creates awareness to show general respect and admiration for women.’<\/p>\n
The BNP Acting Chairman said, ‘The importance of this day in Bangladesh is immense. Half of our population is women. Therefore, if the progress of women’s community is achieved, the overall development of the nation will be possible. Realizing this truth, martyred President Ziaur Rahman took groundbreaking steps to ensure greater participation of women in social and state activities. \u2019<\/p>\n
He said, \u2018In continuation of that, the government of Begum Khaleda Zia, along with implementing comprehensive programs for the socio-economic development of women in this country, took many effective initiatives to remove the darkness of illiteracy among women and to expand education widely. During her rule, the primary school enrollment rate increased to 97 percent. Girls were brought under the umbrella of scholarships and gender equality was established between boys and girls in schools. Two new cadet colleges and three polytechnic institutes were established for girls. Initiatives were taken to establish the Asian University for Women in Chittagong with the help of the United States. \u2019<\/p>\n
Tareek Rahman said, \u2018Begum Khaleda Zia\u2019s government established a national university and an open university and approved private universities and medical colleges to encourage higher education. So that the opportunities for women\u2019s participation also increased. A separate Primary and Mass Education Department was established under the Prime Minister’s Office to ensure that the people of the country are literate as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
He said, ‘Primary education was made compulsory nationwide from July 1, 1993. To make the poor people interested in getting education, the Begum Khaleda Zia government launched the Food for Education Program in 1993. Secondary education for girls was made free of charge in rural areas and a nationwide scholarship program was launched for secondary school students. As a result, self-confidence was awakened among them due to their involvement in the mainstream of women’s empowerment and development. At the same time, they found a way to become economically self-reliant.’<\/p>\n
The BNP acting chairman said, ‘The progress of society and the development of the state are accelerated with the education, training and equal opportunities for women to compete with men. We have to work together to ensure the presence of women in the changing world. Women’s rights are an essential condition for global progress in peace, security, human rights and sustainable development. Everyone should keep a vigilant eye on women so that they do not become victims of neglect, torture and oppression and are not deprived of their fair rights. Equality of women should now be the first agenda in global action.\u2019<\/p>\n
Greeting on Women\u2019s Day, Tarique Rahman said, \u2018On this auspicious day, I call upon everyone to work sincerely for the development and welfare of women.
