The UN fact-finding report on human rights violations and abuses during the July-August 2024 coup in Bangladesh has been presented in Geneva. The report was presented by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk today, Wednesday, after 6 pm Bangladesh time.<\/p>\n
Representatives of the interim government of Bangladesh and civil society participated in the event. At this time, the findings and recommendations of accountability, justice and human rights reforms in Bangladesh were discussed.<\/p>\n
Earlier on Monday, Volker Turk expressed hope that their recent independent fact-finding report would be helpful in truth-telling, accountability, reparations, healing and reform in Bangladesh.<\/p>\n
While giving a global update at the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, he said, \u201cEnsuring due process in criminal cases and investigating retaliatory violence against minorities will also be important.\u201d<\/p>\n
Turk said, \u201cBangladesh has experienced a terrible experience of violence last year. Because the then government had \u2018brutally suppressed a student movement that carried a torch for human rights\u2019.<\/p>\n
\u2018Bangladesh is now charting a new future,\u2019 he said, adding, \u2018Their recent independent fact-finding report on serious human rights violations will make an important contribution to this journey.\u2019<\/p>\n
The report by the UN fact-finding team highlights the human rights violations that occurred in July and August surrounding the student uprising in Bangladesh. The report says that about 1,400 people were killed during the protests, most of them by military rifles and shotguns loaded with lethal metal pellets.<\/p>\n
The report notes that such shotguns are commonly used by Bangladeshi security forces. Thousands of people were seriously injured in the protests. Some were permanently disabled.<\/p>\n
