Major crimes have decreased significantly in the capital in recent times, but minor crimes have increased slightly. These too will decrease very soon, said Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, advisor to the interim government’s Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.<\/p>\n
He said these things while talking to reporters after inspecting the special security arrangements in Dhaka metropolis at Bijoy Sarani at midnight today, Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan said that the law and order forces have not yet fully returned to their previous position after the July uprising. This is a long-term process. However, various activities, including new recruitment and training, have been taken to restructure the force. It is hoped that the law and order situation will improve soon.<\/p>\n
Stating that a special operation is being conducted in cooperation with the police and the military to curb recent crimes, he said, “Under this, identified criminals are being brought under the law.”<\/p>\n
Acknowledging the increase in kidnappings and petty crimes, Asif Mahmud said, “Recently, petty crimes including kidnappings have increased slightly. However, efforts are being made to control the situation by setting up special patrols and check posts.”<\/p>\n
We have ensured the presence of police at intersections in various areas. Block raids and surveillance are being conducted with the help of the army and other forces. We hope that the situation will improve soon, said the advisor.<\/p>\n
He said, “In any country, if there is crime, it is the responsibility of the government and law enforcement agencies to control it. Major crimes such as murder and robbery have decreased significantly, but kidnappings have increased slightly in recent times. We hope that this will also be brought under control soon.”<\/p>\n
Regarding the videos of various crimes that have gone viral on social media recently, he said, “When an incident goes viral, it creates panic among people, which may seem more than the real situation. We should rely on statistics to understand the real picture of crime.\u2019<\/p>\n
In response to a question about extortion, Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan said, \u2018After the July uprising, it has been seen that new extortionists have come in place of the previous extortionists. There is also political fuel behind them. We call on political and social leaders not to condone these crimes.\u2019<\/p>\n
He said, \u2018We have seen that leaders of different political parties are openly announcing extortion with weapons. This is sad. The government is taking a strict stance against extortionists and the law enforcement agencies are taking action against them.\u2019<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, regarding the criminals released on bail, he said, \u2018Those who were involved in crime earlier are still trying to remain associated with their organizations. The law enforcement agencies are keeping an eye on them and will arrest them again if necessary.\u2019<\/p>\n
