Gaibandha district joint convener of the anti-discrimination student movement Shafiqul Islam Akash, Mehedi Hasan and joint member secretary Shefaur Rahman Shipon were attacked. They were rescued and admitted to Sadar Hospital in their injured condition.<\/p>\n
The attack took place at around 8:30 pm on Monday at the month-long cottage industry and product fair at the Swadhinata Precinct in the district town.<\/p>\n
According to police, injured student leaders and eyewitnesses, yesterday was the last day of the month-long fair organized at the Swadhinata Precinct ground in the city. Shariful Islam, Mehedi Hasan and Shefaur Rahman went to the fair premises shortly before 10 pm. At that time, a woman was being harassed in a shop. Then Shariful Islam and student leaders protested. A group of miscreants systematically attacked them. Three of them were hacked with sharp weapons. Shariful Islam had to get about 50 stitches just above his stomach.<\/p>\n
Upon receiving the news, members of the Gaibandha Army Camp led by Gaibandha Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Al Mahmudul Hasan went to the hospital and assured the arrest of the culprits.<\/p>\n
Regarding the attack, UNO Md. Mahmud Al Hasan said that the police and army members are working to investigate the attack. Those involved will be identified quickly and legal action will be taken.<\/p>\n
In this regard, Gaibandha Sadar Police Station OC Shahinur Talukder said that efforts are underway to identify the attackers and arrest them.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, more than a hundred leaders and activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement surrounded the Gaibandha Sadar office from 12 midnight to protest the incident and demand the arrest of the attackers. After receiving assurances from the police, the students left around 1:30 am.<\/p>\n
On behalf of the students, Md. Asaduzzaman filed a case with Gaibandha Sadar Police Station last night as the plaintiff. In it, 9 people have been named and 9-10 unidentified people have been named as accused.<\/p>\n
