Meanwhile, the earthquake that hit the nearby area was also felt in the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka. This information was reported in separate reports by the earthquake and volcanology website Volcano Discovery and the news outlet Live Mint.<\/p>\n
Their website said that a powerful earthquake measuring 5.1 in magnitude struck the Bay of Bengal, 216 kilometers (134 miles) from India at 6:40 am local time on Tuesday. The depth of the earthquake was 10 kilometers (6 miles) and it was felt widely in the area. Due to the shallowness of the earthquake, the tremors were felt more intensely near the epicenter than a deep earthquake of the same magnitude.<\/p>\n
It was also said that we have received possible unconfirmed initial reports of tremors due to an earthquake in or near Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The earthquake may also be felt in the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka, according to the Volcano Discovery report.<\/p>\n

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department also confirmed this information. Rubayet Kabir, the officer-in-charge of the department’s Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center, told the media, “The earthquake was felt at 6:40:25 am. However, there was no immediate report of damage.”<\/p>\n
He also said, “The magnitude of the earthquake on the Richter scale was 5.1. It was a moderate earthquake. The source of this earthquake is the Bay of Bengal adjacent to West Bengal and Odisha in India. As a result, the coastal districts were more affected. The epicenter was 501 kilometers away from Bangladesh.\u2019<\/p>\n

Indian media says that the earthquake lasted only a few seconds. Apart from Kolkata, Howrah, West Midnapore districts, this tremor was felt in several nearby areas.<\/p>\n
