The Election Commission (EC) is preparing to announce the schedule by October, thinking that the national assembly election may be held in December. Meanwhile, most political parties, including the BNP, are pressuring the government to hold the elections by December. On the other hand, the selection of their own candidates is also underway within the parties. Information received says that the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has finalized its candidates for the constituencies. On the other hand, a new political party led by the students who led the July coup is also going to emerge this month. Since these students are the ones who are appointed by the current government. Several election commissioners, including the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), have said that the election will be held by December, and all preparations are being completed by that time. For this, the commission is putting forward the work that needs to be done to announce the election schedule in October. However, there is also uncertainty about whether all registered political parties will be able to participate in this election. Because, the demand for banning the Awami League has been raised by the anti-discrimination student movement. Therefore, doubts have also arisen about the participation of the Awami League’s allied parties in the election. Regarding the preparations for the National Assembly elections, Election Commissioner Md. Anwarul Islam Sarkar said that they will be able to announce the schedule within a reasonable time if they get the results of the consensus commission. He said, we are moving forward with the election preparations targeting December. In this case, the commission will have to be fully prepared for the election from July-August this year, he said.<\/p>\n
The schedule for parliamentary elections is usually announced with a time limit of 40 to 45 days. In that case, the commission also says that if we want to vote in December, the schedule will have to be made in October. The reform of laws and regulations will have to be completed by October.<\/p>\n
According to election observers, there is no obstacle to holding elections by December. Election expert Dr. Md. Abdul Alim, a member of the Electoral Reform Commission and director of the Election Working Group, told our time that it is not possible to implement all the recommendations of the Reform Commission right now. There are some recommendations that can be implemented in a short time by issuing an ordinance. The EC voter list update process is ongoing. Then there is the work of redefining the boundaries. A draft law has also been prepared for the redefining of boundaries. Apart from this, it will take at least six months to implement the recommendations made in the registration of political parties and registration of observers. However, since the elections are going to be held under a special situation this time, the consensus of the political parties is needed.
