Extra bone grows in various bones in the human body. Among them, the calcaneum (foot bone) is one. Usually, the extra bone grows below and behind the heel. This extra bone is called a calcaneum spur. The largest bone in the foot is the calcaneum, which is the first to come into contact with the ground when standing or walking and bears the full weight of the body. Any minor abnormality in it can cause various symptoms. For example, if the heel bone grows, it is not possible to walk normally. Sometimes it will hurt and you have to walk with a limp.<\/p>\n
Reasons for bone growth: Wearing incompatible shoes causes calcaneum spurs. When the leg muscles are weak, there is excess pressure on the foot. As a result, spurs are formed. If the plantar fascia and tendons are inflamed for a long time, extra bone grows in the heel. If there is excess weight in the body, there is a risk of spurs. Heel spurs occur in various types of arthritis such as rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. Many people have hereditary spurs.<\/p>\n
Symptoms: The main symptom is pain. The pain starts when you wake up in the morning or when you try to put your foot down. The pain gradually decreases after walking for a while. There is no pain at rest. Sometimes the pain is so severe that you cannot put weight on the foot. The extra bone causes traction injury to the muscles, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels and air sacs. As a result, tissue accumulates along with pain. Sometimes the soles of the feet become red, the heel pad dries out and the feet become flat, meaning the arch of the foot is destroyed.<\/p>\n
Treatment: Pain will be reduced by taking analgesic drugs. Sometimes, if you push steroid injections locally, the pain will heal quickly. You have to be careful when pushing the injections. Otherwise, the heel pad (ankle) will dry out and the disease will accelerate. Physical therapy, such as SWD, UST and wax bath, can also be beneficial. Because bone growth is slightly reduced but not completely cured.<\/p>\n
Arthroscopic surgery: If medical treatment does not help, if the disease recurs, if the heel pad dries out, if it is difficult to put weight on the foot and if the bone continues to grow, arthroscopic surgery is required. An arthroscope is inserted through small holes on both sides of the ankle, the excess bone is removed by shaving and the plantar fascia is separated. This quickly relieves the symptoms of the disease.<\/p>\n
Home remedies: Wearing appropriate sized and soft shoes can temporarily relieve the pain. Wearing heel and arch support shoes is essential. After waking up in the morning, massage the soles of the feet in a circular motion. Soaking in lukewarm water or cold water twice a day will cure the symptoms. You can do exercises to stress, flex and strengthen the muscles of the soles of the feet and legs.
