The Appellate Division has fixed Tuesday for hearing the review petition against the death sentence of Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam in a case of crimes against humanity.<\/p>\n
This Sunday morning, the Appellate Division headed by Justice Md. Ashfaqul Islam fixed the hearing date.<\/p>\n
Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman presented the matter for hearing in the court. Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam and Jamaat leader Azhar’s lawyer Mohammad Shishir Monir were present at the time.<\/p>\n
The Attorney General said that ATM Azhar’s review petition was on the agenda for hearing on February 20. But the hearing was not held that day. The review petition needs to be heard. The court fixed Tuesday for hearing the matter.<\/p>\n
Earlier, on January 23, the Appellate Division postponed the hearing of the review petition against the death sentence of Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam in a case of crimes against humanity and fixed February 20. Chief Justice Dr. The four-judge appellate bench headed by Syed Refat Ahmed gave the order. The court adjourned the hearing as one of the judges was absent.<\/p>\n
On October 23, 2019, the Appellate Division upheld the death sentence of Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam in a case of crimes against humanity. The Appellate Division, headed by the then Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, gave the verdict. Later, Jamaat leader Azharul Islam filed a review petition against the verdict.<\/p>\n
On December 30, 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Azhar to death by hanging.<\/p>\n
During the Liberation War, ATM Azhar was charged with six crimes against humanity, including genocide and murder of 1,256 people in the Rangpur region, kidnapping of 17 people, rape of one person, detention, torture and serious injuries of 13 people, and looting and arson of hundreds of houses. The tribunal sentenced him to death on all five charges except count 1.<\/p>\n
Although Jamaat-e-Islami has been calling this a farce verdict, on January 28, 2015, Jamaat leader Azhar’s lawyers filed an appeal seeking his acquittal on 113 grounds, claiming his innocence.
