In January, 659 road accidents killed 677 people and injured 1,271. In addition, 57 railway accidents killed 59 people and injured 23, and 16 water accidents killed 18 people, injured 9 and five were missing. This information was revealed in the observation report of the Accident Monitoring Cell of the Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Association based on news reports in the newspaper.<\/p>\n
The report said that during this period, 301 people were killed and 239 were injured in 289 motorcycle accidents. This is 43.85 percent of the total accidents, 44.46 percent of the deaths and 18.80 percent of the injuries. In addition, 156 bus accidents killed 159 people and injured 452 people, which is 23.67 percent of the total accidents, 23.49 percent of the deaths and 35.56 percent of the injuries. Apart from this, 139 people were killed and 336 injured in 163 battery-powered-easy-bike-no-simon-autorickshaw-Mahindra accidents, which is 24.73 percent of the total accidents, 20.53 percent of the deaths and 26.43 percent of the injuries.<\/p>\n
The report shows that in January, 732 accidents on roads, railways and waterways resulted in 754 deaths and 1,303 injuries. The highest number of accidents occurred in Dhaka division this month, while the lowest number occurred in Mymensingh division. Of the total accidents, 41.60 percent were hit by vehicles, 38.18 percent were head-on collisions, 13.35 percent were lost control and fell into ditches, 6.16 percent were due to various reasons and 0.69 percent were train-vehicle collisions.<\/p>\n
Analysis of the type of accidents showed that 37.80 percent of the total accidents occurred on national highways, 28.75 percent were on regional highways, and 28.04 percent were on feeder roads. In addition,<\/p>\n
3.65 percent of the total accidents in the country occurred in Dhaka Metropolitan City, 1.04 percent in Chittagong Metropolitan City, and 0.69 percent at railway crossings.<\/p>\n
According to the Passenger Welfare Association, the causes of road accidents are reckless speeding, dangerous overtaking, road construction defects, unfit vehicles, carelessness of drivers, passengers and pedestrians, driver incompetence and ignorance of traffic laws, reckless attitude of transport drivers and owners, use of mobile phones or headphones while moving, driving vehicles under the influence of drugs, unprotected railway crossings, markets on the road, lack of sidewalks or sidewalks being occupied, corruption and weakness in the enforcement of traffic laws, disobedience of laws, lack of road markings, extortion on the road, lack of specific driver appointments and working hours, lack of lighting on the road, insufficiently high road dividers, lack of accountability of the officials of the institutions and organizations responsible for reducing road accidents, and the shift towards a public transport system based on tuktuki-easy bikes-battery-powered rickshaws, motorcycles, and CNG auto-rickshaws instead of a safe, modern and smart public transport system across the country.
