BNP is not supporting the ongoing anarchic situation, including attacks on fascist establishments across the country, due to the online statements of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled the student uprising and took refuge in India. The party believes that the ongoing situation is part of a conspiracy. The interim government has failed to understand this. If this situation continues, the government will completely fail. In addition, the main spirit of the mass uprising, the establishment of democracy and voting rights and the goal of establishing an elected government through national elections, will be disrupted. In this situation, BNP will meet Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus next Monday to express its concerns, position and opinions on what to do.<\/p>\n
It has been said from the policy-making level of BNP that BNP will not directly blame anyone for the attacks on fascist establishments related to the fallen Sheikh Hasina government and Awami League or hold any program in protest. At the same time, warnings have been given throughout the party so that party leaders and activists do not get involved in such activities. In addition, the party will convey to the countrymen through various meetings and seminars that BNP does not support the ongoing chaos.<\/p>\n
In protest against a virtual speech by Sheikh Hasina, who resigned on August 5 in the face of a mass uprising and fled to India, the houses of Awami League leaders in various districts of the country, including house number 32 in the capital, were attacked on Wednesday. In this situation, the BNP issued a statement calling on the interim government to establish control over the situation in the country. The party said that if control is disrupted, anarchy will spread in the country. The party stated in the statement that it is the demand of the hour to establish strict law and order and make the role of the state and government visible. In this situation, the interim government gave a strong message.<\/p>\n
In this regard, panic spread among BNP leaders and activists due to various rumors. Some leaders changed their places and went to safe shelters. In the emerging situation, an emergency meeting of the BNP National Standing Committee was held at the Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan, the capital, on Friday. The meeting, which started at 11:30 am, lasted until 1:15 pm. The meeting was chaired by the party’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, who joined virtually from London. The leaders discussed various issues including the ongoing situation in the standing committee meeting.<\/p>\n
BNP’s National Standing Committee member Gayesh Chandra Roy said that organizing elections quickly by implementing urgent election-oriented reforms is the main mandate of the interim government. However, ignoring the public’s wishes, the interim government itself appears to be focusing more on other issues rather than prioritizing this priority. This will challenge the main goal of the mass uprising. Therefore, the government should announce the election date soon.<\/p>\n
According to meeting sources, the meeting discussed the incidents of vandalism across the country, including Dhanmondi No. 32, the report of the Reform Commission, and contemporary politics. BNP considers the incidents of vandalism and arson across the country as a conspiracy and a trap to delay the next national election. Therefore, the party has given urgent instructions to its leaders and activists not to get involved in any kind of chaos and violent activities. Such instructions have already been given to the grassroots from the center. It says that in the current situation, party leaders and activists should not be involved in any violent activities including setting fire to the houses of any opposition party, vandalizing murals. BNP expects that every leader and activist of the party will follow this instruction to the letter in the larger interest of the country and the party.<\/p>\n
BNP leaders believe that BNP and the election are being targeted behind such anarchic situation across the country after so long after the mass uprising. Students are showing their strength under the influence of a political party. The objective is to delay the election so that the roadmap is not announced soon. Because, students want enough time to form a new party and consolidate the organization across the country. On the other hand, BNP is demanding quick elections. Domestic and foreign pressure to hold elections is also increasing. In this situation, BNP believes that anarchic situation is being created across the country as part of a conspiracy to delay the elections.<\/p>\n
A BNP leader said in the meeting that various incidents can happen immediately after a revolution or mass uprising in a country. But why do incidents like attacks, vandalism and arson happen after so long? Won’t the country become stable?<\/p>\n
It is learnt that the meeting also discussed various programs demanding early elections. These include rallies in divisional and district districts. The program on this issue will start before Ramadan. This program may be announced on February 10. BNP has been demanding national elections by December this year. Otherwise, the party believes that it is possible to hold elections in July-August. BNP is basically going to organize programs to put pressure on the government to demand elections.<\/p>\n
BNP believes that the goal of the interim government will not be achieved if the ongoing chaotic situation does not improve. The goal of this government is to hold a free, fair and acceptable election with minimum reforms; the kind of election that Bangladesh has not had in the last decade.
