About half a crore people are being added to the voter list for the first time in the country. Of these, more than 3.1 million were previously excluded from the eligible voters and 1.85 million are new voters aged 17. In addition, more than 1.5 million voters will be excluded from the existing list, as they have already died. Of the newly added half a crore voters, 2.41 million are males and 2.55 million are females. That is, 1.41 million more female voters are being added to the list than males. EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed gave this information at a briefing at the Elections Bhaban yesterday.<\/p>\n
Akhtar Ahmed said that till last Monday, the increase in voters among those excluded (those who could not vote in the past) was 2.44 percent and the increase in new voters (those who will be 18 years of age or eligible to vote on January 1 next year) was 1.45 percent. The total increase in voters is 4 percent.<\/p>\n
According to the EC, the ongoing voter update program has collected information on 49,76,845 people, although the target was 89,375 out of 61 lakh. Of these, 31,27,519 are eligible voters who have been excluded; of which 1,464,380 are men, 1,662,992 are women and 147 are transgender. In addition, there are 1,849,326 new voters over the age of 17. Of these, 9,533,312 are men, 8,957,776 are women and 238 are transgender. 1,527,424 will be excluded as deceased voters. Of these, 8,734,299 are men, 6,534,099 are women and 588 are transgender. The Election Commission started collecting information by going door-to-door to update the voter list on January 20. The data collection work was completed last Monday. The work of taking photographs, fingerprints and iris images will start from today, Wednesday, and will continue until April 11. During this period, those who have been excluded will be able to become voters by going to the local registration center.<\/p>\n
The information on the registration of voters born on or before January 1, 2008, those who have been excluded, those who have been excluded from the list of deceased voters and those who have been transferred due to change of residence will be updated.<\/p>\n
ASM Humayun Kabir, Director General of the EC’s NID Wing, said that even though the work of collecting information from house to house has been completed, if someone is excluded, he can go to the local registration center with the necessary documents and become a voter.<\/p>\n
The final list published on March 2, 2024 had more than 121.8 million voters. On January 2, the EC published the draft voter list of last year. The names of 18 lakh 33 thousand 352 people have been added to it. This brings the number of voters to 123.6 lakh 83 thousand 512. Their final list will be published on March 2.<\/p>\n
The EC wants to complete the work of those who are being added to the update by June. In that case, by adding the new ones and excluding the deceased, the final number of voters will be known before the 13th parliamentary election.<\/p>\n
If the election is held in December, many of those whose information was collected will not be able to be registered as voters.
