Canada, China and Mexico have announced retaliatory tariffs on US goods. Earlier, US President Donald Trump imposed 25 percent tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods and 10 percent tariffs on Chinese goods. Now the three countries have announced retaliatory tariffs on US goods.<\/p>\n
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum have separately announced countermeasures. In addition, a similar announcement has been made from China.<\/p>\n
Trudeau said, \u2018Canada will now impose a 25 percent tariff on US imports worth 155 billion Canadian dollars, of which 30 billion Canadian dollars will be effective from Tuesday and the rest will be implemented within 21 days.\u2019<\/p>\n
In response to Trump\u2019s claim that the US tariffs were introduced mainly to reduce the flow of fentanyl, Trudeau said, \u2018The US-Canada border is one of the strongest and most secure borders in the world. Less than 1 percent of the fentanyl entering the United States comes from Canada. Even among illegal immigrants, less than 1 percent come from Canada.\u2019<\/p>\n
Trudeau released a list of several products at a press conference today that will be subject to tariffs. These include American beer, wine, bourbon, fruits and fruit juices (especially orange juice), vegetables, perfumes, clothing and shoes, household appliances, sporting goods and furniture, and materials such as wood and plastic.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that in addition to imposing tariffs, they also have a second plan to protect Mexico\u2019s interests. She said that this plan includes non-tariff items in addition to tariffs.<\/p>\n
In response to Washington\u2019s accusation that Mexico is involved in drug trafficking, Sheinbaum wrote on the social media platform X, \u201cWe strongly reject the false accusations that have been made against the Mexican government that it is in league with the criminal organization of the White House.\u201d<\/p>\n
President Sheinbaum also wrote that if there is such an alliance, it is with US arms manufacturers who sell powerful weapons to these criminal groups.<\/p>\n
Urging the US to do more to stop the illegal flow of weapons to the South, the Mexican president said, \u201cThis is part of the dispute that Mexico has been fighting with Washington for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n
On the other hand, China\u2019s Ministry of Commerce has said that it will take similar countermeasures against the US. China is very dissatisfied with the US\u2019s tariff measures. They strongly oppose it. This is a serious violation of World Trade Organization (WTO) rules. China will take similar countermeasures against the US.<\/p>\n
Earlier, US President Donald Trump imposed a 25 percent tariff on all goods imported from Canada and Mexico through an executive order. However, this tariff has been imposed on Canadian energy products at 10 percent. Citing the “major threat” of illegal immigration and drugs, he has also imposed an additional 10 percent tariff on goods imported from China, which are already subject to various tariffs.
