More than a dozen lawyers who filed criminal cases against US President Donald Trump were fired on Monday, taking another step towards Republican control of the judiciary, Reuters reported, citing an official familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n
The move was made by Trump’s nominee and acting Attorney General James McHenry, who said he did not believe the lawyers would be reliable in carrying out the president’s agenda because they played a key role in the case.<\/p>\n
The fired lawyers were working with special counsel Jack Smith in handling two criminal cases against Trump. However, the Justice Department dismissed the cases after Trump won in November. Smith resigned this month.<\/p>\n
A copy of the resignation letter issued to the lawyers was reviewed by Reuters. In her letter defending her dismissal, McHenry noted that under the US Constitution, Trump’s power is equivalent to that of the chief executive.<\/p>\n
While Trump was out of the White House for four years, legal efforts were made to subdue him. Trump and his supporters threatened to take action against those individuals. Monday’s incident proved that the administration would not back down from carrying out the threat.<\/p>\n
Smith sued Trump for allegedly keeping secret documents at a private club in Florida and interfering in the certification of the 2020 election results. Trump denied the allegations, saying that the cases were examples of using the legal system as a weapon. Smith withdrew the cases after Trump won the election.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, CBS News reported that dozens of senior officials at the International Development Agency USAID have been placed on leave. They have been accused of trying to circumvent the president’s executive order. However, they will continue to receive full pay and other benefits during the leave.<\/p>\n
The US agency is the world’s largest development agency. It spent $68 billion in 2023.<\/p>\n
