The government has issued the Supreme Court Judges Appointment Ordinance, 2025. This ordinance was issued today. As a result, from now on judges will be appointed to the Supreme Court through an independent council. In addition, it has been decided to start a separate secretariat and permanent attorney service for the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n
This afternoon, the Law Ministry’s Advisor Professor Dr. Asif Nazrul informed about these decisions and initiatives at a press conference at the Secretariat.<\/p>\n
Regarding the ordinance the Law Advisor said that a council has been made in it to appoint judges to the high court. This seven-member council will be formed under the leadership of the Chief Justice, two judges of the Appellate Division (one retired and one working), two judges of the High Court and the Attorney General. The other member will be a law professor or legal expert nominated by the chairman of this council (Chief Justice).<\/p>\n
Dr. Asif Nazrul said that this council will collect the names of potential candidates on its own initiative. At the same time there is a system so that any person, any lawyer can apply or propose someone’s name at his own will. This council will conduct interviews after conducting initial screening. This council will be called the Supreme Judicial Appointments Council. He expressed hope that the next appointment to the post of judge in the High Court will be made through this process.<\/p>\n
The legal advisor said that the High Court was a major platform for the lawlessness, extreme human rights violations, and oppression of people during the previous government. People did not get redress there. The reason for this was that political governments appointed judges to the High Court based entirely on party considerations, and in many cases, incompetent people. A former judge made such comments about the appointment of the High Court that \u2018a catastrophe has occurred\u2019.<\/p>\n
He said that if qualified and impartial people are not appointed as judges in the High Court through a transparent process, then the issue of human rights of 17 crore people of the country will remain unresolved and at risk. There has been a demand in the society for many years that experienced, skilled, non-partisan, and truly qualified people be appointed as judges in the High Court through a transparent process. Now a law has been made in this regard. Judges will be appointed to the high court through a transparent and accountable process.<\/p>\n
Stating that there is a separate secretariat for the Supreme Court, Asif Nazrul said, the demand for the establishment of a separate judicial secretariat of the Supreme Court has been in the society for a long time. It has become a national consensus. Its initiative is being taken. It takes some time for detailed examination and examination.<\/p>\n
Regarding the initiative to launch a permanent attorney service, the legal advisor said, there are some complaints that since government prosecutors are appointed by a party, they often cannot play a neutral role. Instead of playing a role for the state, they play a role for the ruling party. The solution to this is to establish a permanent attorney service.
