The court of Chittagong Divisional Special Judge Md. Mizanur Rahman gave the verdict today, Monday (August 3).
Anti-Corruption Commission (AC) Public Prosecutor Advocate Rezaul Karim Rony told Banglanews that the court has sentenced accused Ehsanul Haque to 3 years in prison as the charges were proven based on the testimonies of 14 witnesses. At the same time, he has been fined an amount equal to the embezzlement, i.e. Tk 15,83,900. In default of payment of the fine, he will have to serve another 3 years in prison. According to the case file, while working as a sub-postmaster at Shakpura and Chardwip sub-post offices in Boalkhali, Ehsanul Haque embezzled money by accepting savings and term deposits from customers and recording them in the passbook instead of including them in the office’s main cash book and journal book. Out of this, he embezzled Tk 6,42,000 from Shakpura sub-post office and Tk 9,41,900 from Chardwip sub-post office. When the departmental investigation proved the allegations of embezzlement of a total of Tk 1,583,900, a case was filed with Boalkhali police station on July 14, 2016. Later, after an ACC investigation, a charge sheet was filed in the court on May 30, 2017 and the trial began.
