Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the current government believes that the police are not a lathi force of any particular party or group. Rather, the police will be the protector and savior of the people. The BNP’s election manifesto has unequivocally declared that the main goal is to ensure public safety and transform the police force into a modern, service-oriented and humanitarian organization free from party influence.
He said this while participating in the training closing parade of the 27th BCS police batch at the Sharda Police Academy in Rajshahi on Sunday (August 2) morning. The Home Minister said that the government has taken various initiatives, including increasing manpower, to rebuild the morale of the police force and turn it into an efficient and modern law and order force. One of these is the introduction of the reward and reprimand policy. As part of this, in addition to rewarding police members for their bravery and commendable work, action is also being taken against police members involved in disciplinary violations and crimes.
He further said that the main priority of the current government is to provide relief to the people and establish peace by controlling the law and order situation. The role of the police force is of utmost importance in establishing the rule of law. Like all other institutions, the police force was also affected during the previous fascist government.
Incidentally, the one-year basic training of this batch in Sardah, Rajshahi has been shortened to six months. 56 trainee Assistant Superintendents of Police have already been attached to different districts for practical training. The remaining six months of the training will be completed in two phases over the next two years. Although these officers will undergo field training at the district level, their main posting will remain at the Dhaka Police Headquarters.
