BNP worker beaten and stabbed to death in Sonargaon
A BNP worker was allegedly beaten and stabbed to death in an attempt to establish dominance in the Charkishoreganj-Charhogla village on the banks of the Meghna River in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj. Three others were injured in the incident.
The incident took place on Sunday night (July 26). The deceased, Raju Ahmed (30), is the son of Ainal Haque of the village. The deceased’s family claims that the murder took place due to a political dispute. However, the police said that whether it was a political dispute or a family feud can be confirmed after the investigation.
The deceased’s family alleges that Raju was once involved in BNP politics but withdrew from politics about three months ago. Then a dispute arose over his previous enmity with local BNP leader Shahadat Pradhan. Raju was systematically beaten and stabbed to death due to that dispute.
It is learned that on Sunday night, an argument started between Raju’s cousin and locals Nurul and Zakir over dominance and various political issues. At one point, the matter turned into a fight. Then Raju went there and tried to resolve their dispute but failed. Later, a group of 15 to 20 people led by Nurul and Zakir attacked Raju’s house with country-made weapons. Then the attackers beat and stabbed Raju, seriously injuring him.
When Raju Ahmed’s family members came forward to save him, the attackers beat and injured three more family members. Later, locals rescued Raju Ahmed in a life-threatening condition and took him to Munshiganj General Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
In this regard, accused Shahadat Hossain said, I was not at the scene at the time of the incident. I was living with my father in Narayanganj. There was a long-standing family dispute between Nurul and Zakir. The incident may have occurred due to this dispute. I or any member of my family is not involved in this incident in any way.
Inspector Anwar Hossain of Sonargaon Police Station said, “Whether the incident was due to a political dispute or a family feud can be confirmed after the investigation.” The body has been recovered and sent to the Narayanganj General Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved in the incident.
