Awami League holds surprise procession on highway; 13 arrested
Leaders and activists of the banned Awami League held a surprise procession at the broken bridge area of the Dhaka-Aricha highway. Savar police have arrested 13 people involved in the incident. On Tuesday (July 14) evening and night, 35 to 40 leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliates took out the procession with banners and sticks. Later, the police conducted a drive and arrested them.
The arrested are – Sagar Molla, Mohammad Ali, Raju Ahmed, driver Olil Mia, Rajib Sarkar, Pradeep Kunda, Shahid Hossain, Ratan Kumar Rajbangshi, Moksedur Rahman Sohag, Hridoy Hossain, Jibon Saha, Mokammel Hossain and Sajeeb Mia. The first four of them are drivers of a rented car at Savar bus stand and the remaining nine are leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliates.
Police said that leaders and workers of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations took out a surprise procession at different places on the highway yesterday afternoon and night. Later, they went into hiding. When the matter came to the attention of the police, they were able to arrest 13 people from different places on the highway at night. At that time, several leaders and workers swam across the water. Sub-Inspector (SI) of Savar Model Police Station Anwar Hossain said that the number of leaders and workers from Savar Municipality area is high among those arrested. He said that they are followers of Awami League leaders Rajib Samar and Atiq. Inspector (Investigation) of Savar Police Station Nur Mohammad said that a case was filed on Wednesday morning after identifying the involved people. They will be sent to court today.
