Trump wants 20 percent fee for Hormuz security: BBC
Trump said that the United States is also ready to ensure the security of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important commercial waterways. However, he also gave a condition for this. According to his proposal, 20 percent of the total value of goods transported through the Strait of Hormuz will have to be paid as a security fee.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Monday (July 13), Trump said, “We want to reimburse the countries that we are helping. We are providing security in a very rich region of the world. We are spending a lot of money for this. So we will be paid for this security service.”
He also said that Washington is not playing this role for its own needs, but for the security of its allies. In this context, Trump claimed that the United States has played a “very effective role” in ensuring the security of countries.
Analysts say Trump’s stance has reinforced the concept of “paying for security” in US foreign policy and at the same time added a new economic dimension to the US military presence in the Middle East and its relationship with regional allies.
