Floods disrupt public life in Chittagong, severe shortage of food and clean water
Three hill districts including Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar have been devastated by heavy rains and landslides from upstream. More than 50 people have been reported dead in Chittagong division so far.
Vast areas of low-lying areas of various upazilas including Chakria, Pekua and Matamuhuri are still submerged in floodwaters. Millions of people in remote areas are stranded. There is an acute shortage of food and clean water. Although relief assistance has been provided by the administration, residents say it is insufficient. However, residents of Bandarban have found some relief as there has been no heavy rain since yesterday afternoon. In the last 24 hours, 3 people, including the elderly and children, have died in the Ban River. One person is missing.
Meanwhile, the flood situation in Bandarban has improved somewhat. As the rain has subsided since the morning, water has started receding from some low-lying areas of the district town. As there has been no fresh rain, the water in the Sangu, Matamuhuri and Bangkhali rivers has started receding. However, there is a shortage of food and clean water in the flooded areas. The residents of the affected areas are living in inhumane conditions due to the collapse of the communication system. The administration, army and BGB are on the ground to provide relief to the displaced.
And the flood and landslide situation in Rangamati has not improved significantly yet. The communication system is still disconnected. Although the water has started to recede somewhat in the Farua areas of Baghaichhari and Bilaichhari, many areas of the district are still under water. There is a shortage of food, clean water and relief among the affected people. The army and BGB are working to deliver food, clean water and relief materials to remote areas by boat. In addition, 3 people have died so far and 1 person is missing.
