Severe waterlogging on Dhaka-Tangail Highway
Due to continuous rain in Kaliakoir Municipality, the Dhaka-Tangail Highway and Harinhati areas have been flooded with knee-deep water. People are suffering due to severe waterlogging in Kaliakoir. Public life has been disrupted due to waterlogging in houses, shops and roads in various areas of the municipality and upazila.
This Sunday (July 12) morning, people were seen suffering due to waterlogging in various areas of the municipality including Harinhati, Jorapamp, Biswaspara, Bhanga Masjid, Khajar Deck, Ansar Academy area, Chandra Palli Power, Shatinpur, Habibpur, Rupnagar, Kalabadha, Dainkini, Haratkitala, Maiwan, Dighirpar Battala, Purba Chandra. In some places, roads, businesses and houses have been submerged in knee- and waist-deep water.
Locals complain that unplanned urbanization, filling of canals and reservoirs, narrowing of the natural flow of water and inadequate drainage system are causing waterlogging even with a small amount of heavy rain. Especially in Biswaspara, Harinhati and Pallibidyut areas, the mouths of important canals for water drainage have become narrow, so water cannot be drained quickly. Kaliakoir Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Municipality Administrator AHM Fakhrul Hossain said that due to abnormal rainfall, the water capacity of the canals has exceeded. As a result, water cannot be drained quickly. To deal with this situation, measures have been taken to clean the drains, remove obstacles from the canals and drain water quickly. In the long term, initiatives will be taken to re-excavate the canals and improve the drainage system.
