Heavy rains cause landslides in Chittagong, Bandarban, 5 dead, Cox’s Bazar 2 injured
Due to the low pressure in the Bay of Bengal, heavy rains have lashed 3 hill districts including Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar. Today, seven people died in landslides in Lama, Bandarban and Chakaria, Cox’s Bazar. Today, Thursday (July 9), five people died in a landslide in Azijnagar area of Lama upazila of Bandarban. One person was injured.
Due to heavy and continuous rains, the water of Shangu and Matamuhuri rivers in Bandarban is flowing above the danger level. As a result, various low-lying areas of the district have been submerged. In addition, communication with internal upazila roads including Bandarban Sadar, Rangamati, Chittagong has been cut off.
235 mm of rainfall has been recorded in Bandarban in the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, two people have died in a landslide in Chakaria Baritali Union of Cox’s Bazar. The situation in Chittagong city has further deteriorated due to heavy rains since this morning. Residents of Katlaganj, Chawkbazar, Halishahar, Agrabad, Sholakbahar, Chandangaon Mohra and other areas are suffering from waterlogging.
The Meteorological Department said that a total of 806 millimeters of rainfall has been recorded in Chittagong in the last four days. And 249.4 millimeters of rain has fallen in the last 24 hours. Such rainfall will continue intermittently throughout the day. Meanwhile, classes and examinations in various private schools have been postponed due to incessant rain.
As the rain decreased at night, the water level in the Chengi and Maini rivers and the canals in Khagrachari has decreased slightly. Although waterlogging has improved in some low-lying areas of the district headquarters, parts of Bechhari, Marmapara, Bichitla, Larmapara and Battala are still submerged. However, traffic is still blocked due to flooded roads in some places including Kabkhali and Merung in the upazila. Dighinala-Sajek-Longdu and Baghaichari roads are closed.
Additionally, Dighinala Upazila of Khagrachhari and surrounding areas have been without electricity since yesterday afternoon due to rising water levels at the electricity substation.
