Three sentenced to life imprisonment for gang rape of woman in Tangail

The Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal has sentenced three accused to life imprisonment in the gang rape of a woman in Tangail. The verdict was announced by Tangail Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal Judge and District Judge ANM Elias on Tuesday (July 7) afternoon. The convicts are Abdur Rahim, son of the late Abdus Chamad of Kotarbari village in Jamalpur, Shafiqul Islam Shafi, son of the late Mokshed of Kamaria village in Mymensingh, and Shamsul Haque, son of Moyez Uddin of the same area.
The state’s lawyer, Special Public Prosecutor Advocate Md. Omrao Khan Dilu said that on June 22, 2023, the victim was taken from Jamalpur to the Dokhla Jungle area of ​​Madhupur in Tangail by luring her to show her wedding dress. There, first one and later two more accused gang-raped her. A case was filed in this incident at Madhupur Police Station and a charge sheet was submitted to the court after investigation.
He further said that after the trial, the court sentenced accused Abdur Rahim to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Tk 20,000 under Section 7 of the Women and Children Abuse and Atrocities Act, 2000, and life imprisonment and a fine of Tk 1,00,000 under Section 9(3) of the same act. In default of payment of the fine, he will have to serve additional imprisonment. In addition, the other two accused Shafiqul Islam Shafi and Shamsul Haque were sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of Tk 100,000. In default of payment, the court ordered two years of rigorous imprisonment for each of them.
On the other hand, Advocate Md. Shahanshah Siddique Mintu was the lawyer for the accused.
