Rosatom to return workers to Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant
Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy agency Rosatom plans to bring its workers back to Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant from the middle of this month. It is reported that the workers who were evacuated due to the security situation after the US and Israeli attacks will be returned to work in stages.
Pakistani media outlet Dawn News quoted Qatar-based media outlet Al Jazeera as saying that Rosatom workers will start returning to the Bushehr plant from the middle of July. Rosatom is currently building two new units at the Bushehr nuclear power plant. However, the facility has also been damaged by multiple US and Israeli strikes since the February attack on Iran.
Around 200 Rosatom workers were evacuated from the Bushehr plant in April due to increased security risks. Analysts see Rosatom’s decision as an attempt to re-accelerate construction of the Bushehr project. However, concerns about the safety of nuclear facilities have not yet been fully alleviated amid recent regional tensions. As part of a long-standing cooperation between Russia and Iran in the nuclear energy sector, Rosatom is working on an expansion project for the Bushehr power plant. Analysts expect the new Unit 2 to further increase Iran’s electricity generation capacity.
