Neymar retires from international football
Neymar has announced his retirement from the junior national team following Brazil’s disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The star forward has decided to end his career with the Seleção after their last-16 exit against Norway, according to Brazilian newspaper Globo.
“I tried. I gave my best. My journey began at this MetLife Stadium and ended here. Now everything is over,” the Brazilian star said in an emotional statement after the match. This marked the end of Neymar’s long career with the Brazilian national team.
Neymar made his debut for Brazil in 2010. He is the highest scorer of 80 goals for the Brazilian national team; he also has four hat-tricks. Neymar scored his highest goal against Japan, nine against Brazil. Brazil won the FIFA Confederations Cup and the Olympic gold medal.
It is worth noting that Erling Haaland’s brace helped Norway pull off one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 World Cup. The Nordic nation reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time, eliminating five-time world champions Brazil.
