Floods and landslides kill 30 in Ghana and Ivory Coast
At least 30 people have been killed in floods and landslides caused by days of heavy rain in the West African countries of Ghana and Ivory Coast.
Hundreds of people have been rescued, but many are still missing, Qatar-based media Al Jazeera reported, citing AFP. As a result, it is feared that the death toll could rise.
At least 12 people have been confirmed dead in the capital Accra as of Tuesday after heavy rains began last Monday.
Many homes, roads and low-lying areas in Accra were flooded. Rescue workers worked through the night to rescue people trapped in the area. Greater Accra Fire Service Commander Rashid Kwame Nisau said more than 400 people had been rescued as of yesterday.
Ghanaian President John Mahama has blamed climate change for the extreme weather and has announced plans to demolish illegal structures.
Meanwhile, heavy rains that began on Saturday in Ivory Coast have also claimed lives. While the official death toll has not yet been released, a source close to the fire service and the interior ministry said around 20 people had died.
