The number of earthquakes has increased in different parts of the world in recent times. A magnitude 7.2 earthquake recently struck Venezuela, followed just 39 seconds later by a magnitude 7.5 earthquake. Such an event is called a ‘doublet.’ A doublet is when two earthquakes of similar magnitude occur in close proximity, which can cause more damage. The USGS reported that 93 earthquakes measuring 4.5 or greater struck the world between June 19 and 26, indicating an increase in seismic activity worldwide. At the same time, a moderate earthquake measuring 5.6 also struck near Redwood Valley in northern California, USA. Its epicenter was in Mendocino County. The earthquake struck about 5 miles below the surface.
