The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Venezuela last week has risen to 1,719, the country’s National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez said on Monday (June 29). He said at least 22,619 people have been affected by the earthquake so far. Of them, 5,034 are injured. At least 855 buildings have been damaged, 189 of which have completely collapsed.
Rodriguez also said 609 aftershocks have been felt since the earthquake struck last Wednesday. Although another strong tremor was felt on Monday, no new significant damage was reported. Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) expressed concern that the final death toll could be 10,000 or more, given the circumstances. According to the agency, there is a 44 percent chance of such a situation.
Rescue and relief operations are still underway in the areas affected by the earthquake. It is feared that more people may be trapped under the rubble of the collapsed building. As a result, the number of casualties may increase over time, said the officials concerned.
