Norway’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Håkan Arald Gulbrandsen, has said that Norway is working to establish democracy and peace in Bangladesh and the world. He said that his country has a strong position in favor of peace, tolerance and sustainable development in various bilateral meetings and international forums.
He said this while delivering a speech at the Rotary Peace Conference-2026 at the United International University in the capital on Monday (June 29). The ambassador said that Bangladesh has been working as a long-term trusted partner of Norway.
The Norwegian government signed a new agreement last March to ensure long-term stability and the rule of law, and to ensure the independence and reform of the judiciary. Bangladesh and Norway are very reliable partners of each other in UN peacekeeping missions. Ambassador Gulbrandsen praised the heroism and sacrifice of Bangladeshi peacekeepers in maintaining peace and stability around the world.
At the conference, Rotary International’s Bangladesh Country Coordinator Ishtiaq A Zaman said that there are about 6,000 Rotarians in Bangladesh. They can play a role in the country’s emergency vaccination, food and medical activities. They can also stand by the war-torn ordinary people at the international level. He also said that there is an opportunity to expand the activities of the Rotary Club.
Former Ambassador Dr. Md. Zulfikar Rahman said that the Bangladesh Army plays an important role in establishing peace in different countries of the world. There is an opportunity for the Rotary Club to do some work there.
In his welcome speech at the conference, Rotary International’s Deputy Country Coordinator AKM Shamsul Huda said that trillions of dollars are spent on weapons in different parts of the world. Thousands of people die in wars due to countries involved in this arms race. Millions of ordinary people are living in inhuman suffering due to this war. But not much money is spent on establishing world peace. Rotarians want to establish peace in these war-torn countries and stand by the injured.
The leaders and members of the Rotary Club of Bangladesh participated in the Rotary Peace Conference. At the conference, they jointly pledged to play a role in establishing world peace.
