Mother and three daughters hacked to death in Laxmipur, accused killed in mob lynching
A mother and three daughters were hacked to death in Raipur, Laxmipur. The accused was also beaten to death in this incident. All of them, who were seriously injured, died one by one by noon today, Thursday (June 25).
The deceased are mother Shahinur Begum (38), her elder daughter Saima Akhter (21), middle daughter Iqra Akhter (17) and younger daughter Shifa Akhter (9). In addition, Antar Majumdar, the accused in the mob lynching incident, has also died. Antar is the son of Kartik Majumdar of Subarnachar area of Noakhali. He was a mobile fruit vendor in Raipur. Meanwhile, 6-7 policemen were injured in an attack by an agitated mob with bricks and stones while trying to control the situation while the accused was being beaten to death at the spot.
Police and local sources said that Shahinur’s house is in Comilla district. She had been living in a rented house in Raipur for about 12-14 years. For many years, Shahinur and her children lived in the house of Amir Hossain Master at the scene. In 2019, her husband Md. Kamal died of electrocution. Since then, Shahinur has been living in that house with her three daughters and one son.
This morning, Shahinur was hacked to death along with her three daughters. In this incident, the locals beat up the accused Antar. On the other hand, when all the injured were rescued and taken to the Upazila Health Complex, the doctors declared Shahinur, her daughters Saima and Shifa dead. Her eldest daughter Iqra also died in the afternoon on her way back to Dhaka due to serious injuries.
In this incident, the agitated crowd beat up the accused Antar and took him to the Sadar Hospital in serious injuries, where he also died. Meanwhile, while trying to control the heated situation at the scene, the agitated crowd pelted bricks and stones, injuring 6-7 policemen.
Shahinur’s only son Sifat Hossain works in the business of Raipur Merchants Association President Saiful Islam Murad. Murad said Sifat’s mother and three sisters were hacked to death. He did not know anything when he came to work in the morning. He has been terrified since the incident. He is in no condition to talk to anyone.
Raipur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Baharul Alam said that five people were brought to the hospital in injured condition. Of these, two girls and their mother died. One of his daughters was sent to Dhaka in a serious condition. She also died later. In addition, one accused was injured in the mob lynching. He had a sharp weapon injury on his head. He also died while undergoing treatment at Sadar Hospital.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (Raipur Circle) Md. Abdur Rashed said, “When we went to bring the situation under control, agitated people pelted bricks and stones, in which 6-7 of our members were injured.”
Laxmipur District Superintendent of Police Md. Abu Tarek said that the murderer Antar and his wife had been renting a house at the scene for about a year and a half. He left the house about 7-8 months ago. Antar probably came to the house in the morning because he knew them. Then he committed the incident. A neighbor named Rani saw Antar at the house and asked why he had come. Antar then said that he had come to fix the water pipe. Rani did not believe him and blocked the folding gate and informed the local residents. If she had not taken this step, the incident might not have been solved. Even then, the investigation into the incident is ongoing. However, the police could not say why they were killed.
