UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as Prime Minister. He announced the decision after days of pressure from within his own Labour Party. He made the announcement while speaking to reporters outside 10 Downing Street in London on Monday (June 22).
“Every decision I have made has been to put the country I love first. That is why I am resigning as leader of the Labour Party,” Starmer said.
He also said he would ask the party’s national executive to set a timetable. The nomination period will start on July 9 and end before the summer recess. If there is a contest, a new leader will take over before Parliament resumes in September. “I will remain as Prime Minister until the contest is over.”
He said he had already spoken to King Charles III. He added that he would do his utmost to ensure an orderly transfer of power.
Incidentally, he brought the Labour Party an absolute victory in the 2024 election. He was in power for 14 years in the United Kingdom, which was plagued by inflation and economic crisis. However, Starmer’s popularity declined due to various policy mistakes and controversies. The pressure on Starmer had been increasing for the past few months. Rumors of his resignation were also heard several times. Recently, the pressure on Starmer to resign increased after his political rival Andy Burnham won a big victory in a by-election in North West England. Finally, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that he would indeed resign.
