Shibir leader killed in clash over school committee in Gaibandha
A student Shibir leader named Saifullah Bari (22) was allegedly killed in a clash over the formation of the board of directors of a government primary school in Saghata, Gaibandha. Another person was injured in the incident. The incident took place in the Bonarpara area of the upazila around 3 pm on Sunday (June 21).
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Saghata Police Station Mahbubur Rahman said that a person named Ashraf has been arrested in the incident. The deceased Saifullah Bari is the president of Bonarpara Union Chhatra Shibir and the son of Habibur Rahman of Shimaltair village. Another Shibir activist named Salahuddin was injured in the attack. He is undergoing treatment at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogra.
According to police sources, the last day to submit nomination papers for the election of the board of directors of Kachua Government Primary School was June 16. When he went to submit his nomination papers for the post of president that day, the school headmaster Habibullah told him that he needed permission from the higher authorities to participate in the elections as he was working as an administrative officer in Jumarbari Union Parishad. An argument and scuffle broke out between the two parties over this. Later, a written complaint was filed with the police station regarding the incident.
Habibullah, the headmaster of Kachua Government Primary School, said that yesterday, on his way back from the education office, some people abused him at a tea shop in Bonarpara. Then, when his nephew Mofach protested, an argument started between the two parties. Later, when Saifullah Bari and Salahuddin, who were present there, protested, the situation became heated. At one point, the opposing party attacked him with sharp weapons. Two of them were seriously injured. Later, locals rescued them and took them to Gaibandha General Hospital, where the doctor declared Saifullah Bari dead.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that in the evening after the incident, an agitated mob set fire to the house of accused Mokhlesur Rahman Mukul. Later, fire brigade members reached the spot and brought the fire under control. OC Mahbubur Rahman said that the police started an investigation immediately after the incident. A person named Ashraf has been arrested in this incident. A drive is underway to arrest the other accused and the process of taking legal action is underway.
