The death of five expatriates in Sylhet’s Kanighat upazila in a road accident in Qatar has cast a shadow of grief over their village. Relatives are now distraught after losing the family’s sole breadwinner. They have demanded immediate repatriation of the body. Jibal Ahmed of Amarpur village in Kanighat had been working as a construction worker in Qatar for about 20 years. He had a wife and five children. The family is in deep shock and uncertainty after hearing the news of his death.
Relatives said that all the responsibilities of the family were on his shoulders. Now in his absence, they are worried about the future. Jasim Uddin of the neighboring village is also in the same situation. He had been in exile for about 9 years. He had built a house on loan and was supposed to return to his country after two months. But before that, he died in an accident.
In addition to Jibal and Jasim, a shadow of grief has also fallen on the homes of Kadir Ahmed, Zubair Ahmed and Mostaq Ahmed of the same upazila. The relatives have demanded that the bodies be brought back to the country as soon as possible for burial and that the government and the concerned parties stand by the affected families. Kanighat Upazila Executive Officer Mehedi Hasan Shakil said that the matter has been reported to the Union Parishad Chairman. In addition, efforts are being made through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to bring the bodies back to the country as soon as possible.
