Breaking Bad actor Giancarlo Esposito converts to Islam in Saudi Arabia
Hollywood actor Giancarlo Esposito converted to Islam while in Saudi Arabia, according to Turki Al-Sheikh, chairman of the General Entertainment Authority of Saudi Arabia. Al-Sheikh said that while filming in Saudi Arabia, he recited the Shahada, the basic belief of Islam, and later joined members of the production team in prayer at a mosque.
Giancarlo Esposito has been working in Hollywood film and television for a long time. He is particularly popular for his role as Gus Fring in the critically acclaimed Netflix series ‘Breaking Bad’, which brought him international fame and multiple award nominations. He has also starred in the ‘Breaking Bad’ spin-offs ‘Better Call Saul’ and ‘The Mandalorian’, as well as various big-budget Hollywood projects.
Turki Al-Sheikh added that Esposito is believed to have made the decision after being impressed by his experience working in Saudi Arabia, his contact with the local Muslim community and the hospitality. He also expressed his gratitude for the experience he gained there. A video circulating on social media shows Esposito praying with members of the production team inside a mosque.
Saudi Arabia is currently increasing the participation of foreign artists in various major projects as part of its international expansion of its entertainment and film industry. Accordingly, several productions, including ‘Seven Dogs’, are being shot in the country, in which international stars are participating.
