In the national elections last February, Jamaat-e-Islami gave a big message of coming to power for the first time as the main party of a coalition. Confidence and innovation were also seen in the election manifesto and campaign. However, in the election results, the people voted to sit on the left side of the Speaker of Parliament. Jamaat won 68 seats in the elections and became the main opposition party. BNP formed the government by winning a majority of seats. The ruling and main opposition parties took oath on February 17. The party is satisfied with its role as an opposition party in these three months. They claim that they are active in supporting good initiatives and preventing anti-people decisions.
Within three months of taking oath, the ruling party has started walking on the path of fascism—this is the opinion of Jamaat-e-Islami. They also claim that ignoring the referendum, appointing administrators in local governments, and unbridled extortion—above all, this undemocratic behavior of the government is gradually making the party unpopular with the people. The first session of the parliament has already ended. Which was full of verbal battles, tension, disagreements; even the opposition party walked out. There are still differences with the government on the implementation of the July Charter and referendum verdict and constitutional reforms.
Jamaat leaders said that the government made a mistake on this journey by rejecting the referendum verdict. Through this, the government has lost the trust of a large number of voters who voted ‘yes’ and the opposition party. Jamaat leaders claim that the appointment of administrators in local governments despite being a democratic government is another undemocratic behavior of BNP. They said that continuous extortion and maintaining the management left by the Awami government is basically another step towards fascism.
Jamaat-e-Islami Naib-e-Amir Professor Mujibur Rahman said, ‘These three months are testimony that the country is probably not moving in the right direction. We do not see the initiative that needs to be taken for this.’ He further expressed concern that many activities are being carried out like the previous fascist government and if extortion is not stopped and good governance is not established, the people may become angry and move towards another big movement.
Mohammad Kamal Hossain, Assistant Secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan South Jamaat, said, ‘This government is moving towards a fascist regime. The goal with which the revolution was made has not yet been fulfilled.’ However, Jamaat leaders are claiming that their position as an opposition party is unwavering. In addition to opposing anti-people decisions, they are also adamant about not participating in them. However, they claim that there are many examples of supporting government decisions that are beneficial to the people.
Kamal Hossain said, ‘The alliance of 11 parties including Jamaat is on the right track. We will protest against any undemocratic and unjust decision of the government. Professor Mujibur Rahman said, “We will cooperate with the good work of the government.” The leaders said, “We will stand against the bad work and work to correct it.” They also said that overall, the party is fully focused on implementing the July Charter and the referendum verdict.
