Education Minister Dr. ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon said that the number of government universities in the country has increased to 57, while the number of private universities is also more than a hundred. However, there is no clear idea about the quality of education in these institutions. He said these things as a special guest at the inauguration of a day-long national workshop titled ‘Transformation of Higher Education in Bangladesh: Roadmap for Sustainable Excellence’ at the Nabab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building of Dhaka University on Tuesday (May 12) morning.
The Education Minister said, ‘We are far ahead in terms of quantity in the field of education, but we do not know how good the quality is. Therefore, it is the demand of the time to think about ‘needs-based education’. He also said that the government is working on a new curriculum and outcome-based education system. Once upon a time, foreign teachers used to come to Bangladesh to teach and foreign students also used to come to study. Now that position is no more. The education system needs to be restructured according to the needs of the time.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the program. The workshop is scheduled to feature multiple technical sessions throughout the day. The sessions will discuss and formulate recommendations on various issues including graduate employability, soft skills development, demand-driven education, industry-education collaboration, global competitiveness, digital transformation, digital literacy, artificial intelligence, teacher skills development, research excellence, internationalization, good governance, and quality assurance.
