Extortionist arrested for using AI to create objectionable photos in Patuakhali
Police have arrested a young man named Rimon Islam (25) in Patuakhali on charges of extortion using AI technology. He was arrested with the help of RAB-11 from a rented house in Muslim Nagar area of Fatulla police station in Narayanganj on Monday (May 11). That night, he was brought to Kalapara police station in Patuakhali. Originally, Nasir Uddin Molla Mintu, a contractor from Rahampur area of the municipal city, filed an extortion case against Rimon and two others at the police station on May 6. Rimon was arrested in that case.
Nasir Uddin, the plaintiff in the case, said that a few days ago, Rimon and his associate had posted a bad status in his name on a Facebook page called ‘Kalaparar Soyo’. Later, they used AI to add his photo with a woman and spread it on that page and demanded a ransom of Tk 5 lakh through a message on WhatsApp. They threatened that the AI video would be released if the ransom was not paid. Finding no other way, Mintu paid them about 1 lakh taka in stages through bKash. Even then, when they demanded more ransom on WhatsApp, he was forced to take legal action. Kalapara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazrul Islam said that during the initial interrogation, the accused confessed to demanding ransom. He will be sent to court on Tuesday. A drive is underway to arrest the other accused.
