86 percent of children aged 6 months to 5 years have received the measles vaccine. Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain has expressed hope that the measles situation across the country will improve in the next 4-5 days. He said this while participating in a seminar organized at a hotel in Banani, the capital, on Monday (May 4) afternoon.
The minister said that it takes about three weeks for the vaccine to start working. However, they hope that the situation will be brought under control soon through ongoing management. He said that children’s immunity is decreasing due to malnutrition and low intake of breast milk, which increases the risk of death from various complications including pneumonia.
The government claims that although there was a shortage of vaccines during the previous government’s tenure, it was possible to overcome it with foreign assistance. Stating that a large consignment of vaccines will reach the country on May 6, the Health Minister said that regular vaccination activities will be strengthened again once the measles outbreak decreases.
