Father’s body in the morgue, four helpless children beside injured mother
Hafiza Begum had gone out to work with her husband Badrul Amin. He is now receiving treatment at the bedside of Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital in a seriously injured condition. Her four children are looking helplessly at her side. These children do not know that their father’s body is kept in the hospital morgue. His wife also does not know that her beloved man is no longer alive. Eight workers were killed when they were thrown from a pickup van after being hit by a truck loaded with jackfruit on Sunday morning (May 3). Among the deceased is Hafiza Begum’s (30) husband Badrul Amin (34).
It is learned that the deceased Badrul Amin was going to work with his wife Hafiza Begum. Badrul Amin used to drive a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw. Due to poverty and hardship, he started living in the Bhatalia area of the city with new hope a few days ago and started working as a construction worker. Police said that the 14 workers in the pickup were going to a construction site. Four people died on the spot and four more died after being taken to the hospital. The remaining seven were undergoing treatment at the hospital in critical condition.
The deceased were: Nargis, wife of Idris Ali of Dharmapasha upazila of Sunamganj, Munni Moni, daughter of Basir Mia of Dirai upazila, Faridul, son of Nur Salam and Suruj Ali, son of the late Fakrul Ali, Pandab Biswas, son of Kuthir Biswas of Shibganj upazila, Badrul Zaman, son of Sujat Ali of Putamara village, Azir Uddin and his brother Amir Uddin of Bishwambharpur upazila of Sunamganj, and Ramin (50), son of the late Alim Uddin of Dirai Bhatipara area of Sunamganj.
The injured are Alamgir, son of Rafiq Mia of Chunarughat upazila of Habiganj, Afroz Mia, son of Mallik Mia of Dirai upazila of Sunamganj, Turab Ullah, son of the deceased Shukkur Ullah of the same area, Rabu Begum of Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj, and Hafiza Begum, wife of Badruzzaman of Putamara village of Companiganj upazila of Sylhet. Meanwhile, another worker, Ramim Mia (50), who was undergoing treatment, died last night. He is the son of Alim Uddin of Bhatipara village of Dirai upazila of Sunamganj. He lived in a colony in Amberkhana Loharpara. This has increased the death toll in the accident to 9. Meanwhile, the drivers of the pickup and truck are absconding since the accident. Police said that a drive is underway to arrest them. Relatives of the deceased have demanded a proper investigation into the accident and strict action against those responsible.
