On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, Jamaat-e-Islami has called for protecting media freedom and ensuring a safe working environment for journalists. The party’s Secretary General and former MP Miah Golam Parwar made this call in a statement on Saturday (May 2) night.
In the statement, the Jamaat Secretary General extended his greetings and congratulations to the country’s journalistic community, media workers and all concerned. He said that the media is the fourth pillar of the state and an independent, impartial and responsible media plays an important role in establishing democracy, human rights and justice.
Miah Golam Parwar said that there is no alternative to an independent media to highlight the hopes and aspirations, problems and prospects of the people. However, unfortunately, the country’s journalists are facing obstacles, harassment, attacks, lawsuits and obstacles to freedom of expression at various times in carrying out their professional duties. He said that ensuring the security of journalists and ensuring the right to freely express the truth is very important to build a democratic and welfare state.
Calling on the government, the Jamaat secretary said that effective steps must be taken to protect media freedom, ensure the safety of journalists and maintain transparency in the flow of information. At the same time, he stressed the importance of the media presenting news responsibly, objectively and ethically. The statement expressed hope for building a Bangladesh where the media can work independently and there will be no obstacles in revealing the truth.
