The United States has approved a $5 billion arms sale to Israel amid rising tensions with Iran in the Middle East. The approval also includes another Arab ally of the United States, Qatar. The US State Department informed Congress of the decision on Friday (May 1). The sale has been described as important to achieving US foreign policy and national security goals.
Qatar will receive Patriot missile defense systems worth $4 billion. The sale aims to enhance Qatar’s air defense capabilities and protect critical installations amid ongoing regional unrest. Israel will receive a guided weapon system worth about $1 billion. These advanced weapons will increase the accuracy and effectiveness of hitting targets.
Under US law, such major military equipment sales require congressional review and approval before they can be finalized. The State Department said providing these defense equipment to strategic partners is critical to maintaining the balance of power in the region and deterring potential aggression.
