Seven members of the same family sentenced to death and two to life imprisonment in Mymensingh murder case
A court in Mymensingh has sentenced seven accused to death and two to life imprisonment in the murder case of college student Shahinur Islam Iqbal. In addition, the death-sentenced accused have been fined Tk 50,000 each.
In addition, the life-sentenced accused have been ordered to pay a fine of Tk 25,000 each and in default of payment, they have been ordered to serve another year of rigorous imprisonment. Today, Tuesday (April 21) at around 3:30 pm, Mymensingh District and Sessions Judge Court Judge Md. Zakir Hossain announced the verdict in the presence of the accused.
The death-sentenced are Asif Rana Naeem (24), his father Golam Hossain (55), Golam Hossain’s brother Mohammad Ali (56), Md. Yunus Ali alias Inos Ali (62) and Shamsul Haque (48), Mohammad Ali’s son Md. Farid Ahmed alias Babu (23) and Golam Hossain’s cousin Md. Abdul Helim (55).
The life imprisonment convicts are Khaleda Akhtar (49), wife of death row convict Mohammad Ali, and Rehena Khatun (48), wife of Golam Hossain alias Gulu. All the accused are members of the same family. State lawyer Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam confirmed the news and said that on the night of May 31, 2021, Shahinur Alam Iqbal (19), son of Abdur Rouf, a grocer of Palashkanda Tanpara village in Tarakanda upazila of Mymensingh, was killed and his body was kept in an abandoned septic tank due to a land dispute.
Then, the accused threw dead foxes and dung in the septic tank and planted trees to remove people’s suspicions. Meanwhile, Shahinur Islam Iqbal’s elder brother Selim Mia filed a general diary (GD) at Tarakanda Police Station in search of his brother. Five days after the incident, the police searched the septic tank next to the accused’s house and recovered Iqbal’s semi-decomposed body. It is learnt that the deceased Iqbal was a student of the civil engineering department of Mymensingh Rumdo Polytechnic Institute. The court gave this verdict today after taking the testimonies of 24 people in the case and proving the allegations. Advocate AHM Khalequzzaman was the accused’s lawyer in the case.
