In Sonagazi, Feni, there have been allegations that Jamaat women swore on the Quran to demand votes in the name of election campaign. On the other hand, Jamaat has claimed that Jubo Dal leaders and activists have obstructed their regular Quran classes.
On Monday afternoon (January 12), some female Jamaat leaders and activists gathered at the house of municipal Jamaat leader Kashem Mia in Ward No. 8 of Sonagazi Municipality. It has been alleged that they invited some women from the area to a Quran education class, made them swear by touching the Quran and asked them to promise to vote on scales.
At one point, it has also been alleged that some women were prevented from leaving. When the situation became heated at that time, the invited women called their relatives and requested them to rescue them. On receiving the news, some local Jubo Dal leaders and activists rushed to the spot. Meanwhile, Jubo Dal leaders and activists have alleged that votes are being sought under the guise of Quran education classes and attempts are being made to fulfill vote promises by threatening heaven and hell.
Jubo Dal leaders Nur Alam Jiku, Enam and Iqbal, along with other leaders and activists, have claimed that the incident is a violation of the election code of conduct. On the other hand, Mahila Jamaat leaders have claimed that they were only conducting regular Quran education classes and there was no political activity there. Later, local municipal ward Jamaat president Nur Nabi went to the spot and talked to both parties and calmed the situation.
In this regard, Sonagazi Upazila Jubo Dal president Khurshid Alam Bhuiyan said, “The incident of seeking votes in the name of Quran education is in no way acceptable. The Quran is not anyone’s property.” Sonagazi Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kamrul Hasan said that after receiving the information, a police team went to the spot and talked to both parties and brought the situation under control. The police official said that the matter was settled there.
