Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is showing interest in buying Spanish club Barcelona. François Gallardo, a journalist for the Spanish TV show El Chiringuito, claimed that he is considering an offer of 10 billion euros to buy Barcelona. This interest fits in with Saudi Arabia’s investment strategy in the sports sector. Saudi Arabia wants to play a significant role in sports through direct investment or public investment funds. Barcelona has attracted attention as part of this plan.
According to Gallardo, Barcelona’s debt is now more than 2.5 billion euros. It is difficult for the club to repay this debt. Keeping this reality in mind, an offer of 10 billion euros could come. In Bangladeshi taka, which is about 1.5 lakh crore taka. It is believed that the Saudi Crown Prince could gain control of the entire club. However, in reality, such a deal is very difficult to make. Because Barcelona is a club owned by its members. Here the ‘socialists’ decide. They will not agree to hand over the club to a foreign company. Gallardo himself has made this clear.
Theoretically, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund could invest in Barcelona’s entertainment department if it wanted. But they would not have control over the club’s daily football management. The investment would not result in a change of ownership. Real Madrid is thinking the same way. Club president Florentino Perez is reportedly considering investing in the entertainment department separately. While the Saudi crown prince’s interest is big news, buying Barcelona outright is almost impossible. The biggest obstacle to foreign ownership is the club’s structure.
