Japan: Tokyo Steel’s Tokyo Bay scrap yard reaches 20,000-t monthly collection milestone

Tokyo Steel’s Tokyo Bay Satellite Yard (SY) achieved its monthly steel scrap collection target of 20,000 t for the first time in July, marking a key milestone just over a year after commencing operations in June 2025.

Despite intermittent reductions in purchase prices amid weaker overseas scrap markets, the yard maintained strong inbound volumes throughout the month. Scrap arrivals increased steadily from mid-May, approached 20,000 t in June, and exceeded the target during the final week of July.

The Tokyo Bay SY primarily procures heavy melting scrap (HMS) and shredded scrap and has expanded its purchasing categories since October 2025. Located in Japan’s largest scrap export hub, the facility plays a strategic role in Tokyo Steel’s domestic procurement strategy by ensuring a stable supply of locally sourced scrap.

The yard spans 6,202 square metres, making it the largest among Tokyo Steel’s four satellite yards. Given its limited storage capacity, continuous outbound shipments are essential to sustain monthly collection volumes of 20,000 t.

Tokyo Steel attributed the achievement to efficient handling operations by logistics partner NEWSCON and the introduction of dedicated rail transport to its Utsunomiya plant in May 2026, which improved scrap movement and supported higher throughput.
