Assam flood death toll rises to 75

Even as flood waters in Assam, India, have started receding, seven more people have died in the last 24 hours. This has taken the death toll in the ongoing floods to 75. However, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the number of people affected by the floods has come down slightly to 3.32 lakh.
The state government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 9 lakh for the families of the deceased. Authorities said that Sibsagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Naogaon, Sonitpur, Kamrup districts are still under water. 622 villages in these districts have been affected by the floods.
The Army, Air Force, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), fire brigade and volunteers are carrying out rescue and relief operations. The ASDMA bulletin said that about 45,342 hectares of agricultural land have been submerged so far due to the floods. This has caused extensive damage to crops and houses. The administration is continuing relief and rehabilitation activities to deal with the situation.
