Russia’s massive missile and drone strikes in Ukraine kill 8
Russia launched a massive airstrike on several regions of Ukraine on Saturday (July 11) using missiles, drones and guided bombs. Ukrainian officials said at least 8 people were killed and dozens were injured.
Meanwhile, a missile strike in the capital Kiev injured 12 people, including two children, the city’s mayor said. Journalists in Kiev reported hearing two loud explosions in quick succession in the early hours of the morning. Air raid warning sirens sounded in the city minutes after the first blast.
Russia has carried out missile and drone strikes on Kiev almost daily since it launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. However, a series of recent attacks using high-speed ballistic missiles have increased the pressure on Ukraine’s air defenses.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had fired more than 120 drones and 12 missiles overnight, half of them ballistic missiles. “Civilian infrastructure was hit even before the airstrike warning was issued,” he said.
Zelensky posted videos on social media of rescue workers working through the rubble. He said residential buildings, offices and a religious seminary had been damaged in Kiev. Rescue operations were also underway in several other regions of the country.
Meanwhile, a Russian controlled bomb attack killed five people, including a teenage girl, according to the mayor of the northern city of Sumy. Ukrainian authorities also said one person was killed in a Russian strike in the eastern city of Sloviansk and two in a missile strike in the southern city of Odessa.
