Khamenei to be buried today
Iran’s former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will be buried with state honors today, Thursday (July 9). He will be buried in his hometown of Mashhad in northeastern Iran. His body has already been returned to Iran from the historic Karbala in Iraq. It was then taken to the Imam Reza shrine for burial.
He was killed in a joint US-Israeli attack on February 28. Khamenei was born in Mashhad in 1939. The city is considered very holy to Shiite Muslims. The shrine of Imam Reza, one of the top 12 Shiite leaders, is located in Mashhad. It is believed that Khamenei will be buried in Iran’s holiest shrine to recognize him as a religious leader.
However, Iran’s state news agency IRNA confirmed that Khamenei will be buried at the Imam Reza shrine on Thursday evening. Previously, the country’s former President Ebrahim Raisi, who was killed in a helicopter crash in 2024, was also buried in the same complex.
